The Story of Dr. James D Freeny
The medical books are in the possession of James D Freeny,  great-great-grandson of Doctor James D.  There have been several books written about the Freeny family, which can be found on the 'Books' page of this site.  Most of the information, in this summary was obtained from these sources.  I may occasionally link to pages in these books.  Where I do,  click 'Back' to return here.  .Since the Freeny family has been well covered by these books, this summary will concentrate on his lineage directly to the living James D Freeny and his sisters, Jennie Lee Roland and Nancy Sue Reeves.
Dr. Freeny was born 16 June 1816, in Opelika, in Baldwin County, Georgia.  He died, at the young age of 49 years, 3 months and 22 days, at his home in Freeny, Leake County, Mississippi, from pneumonia.
He was married to Mary Elizabeth  (Freeny) Butts, born 17 October 1815, who, it would appear from information currently available, might have been  his first cousin.  This is based on the unproven, but somewhat supported, assumption that Dr. James D's father, Gillah Freeny was the son of Elijah Freeny, Sr.  There is also unproven evidence, in Freeny Kith & Kin, by Thomas Glynn Freeny, that Gillah may have been the son of one of Elijah's brothers, which would have made James and Mary 3rd cousins.

Dr. James D. and Mary were married 21 May 1839, in Montgomery, AL.  She was married first to John L. Butts, on 18 Oct 1830, and had 2 children.  Her husband and oldest child died in 1834, leaving her a widow.  After her marriage to Dr. James D, they moved, in 1853, to the Freeny community in Leake County, MS, where he died on 7 April 1865, leaving his wife and 6 children.  See a copy of his
death notice  in Freeny Kith and Kin.
Mary Freeny died 6 Apr 1894 and her death notice, from the Carthaginian, is also in
Freeny Kith & Kin.  The obituary says she had 14 children, with 7 living.  The living children would seem to be the 6 surviving children of Dr. James D., plus a daughter from the Butts marriage.  The one Butts child and one Freeny child, known to have died young, still leaves 5 children unaccounted for.  The surviving children of Dr. James D and Mary, as listed in the 1860 census were Rebecca J. (age 17), who was possibly also known as, or was a surviving twin of, Octavia Augusta, Robert J. (age 15), Clement (age 13), Charles (age 11), Wyche (age 10) and Eliza E. (age 6).  The children would have been 5 years older when their father died in 1865.
Following the line, mentioned above, we have Dr. James D's son, Clement (Clem), his son, Olin, his son, Cleveland and his children, Nancy Sue, James D and Jennie Lee.
Clem was born 22 Feb 1847, in Mt. Meigs, AL, and moved with his parents in 1853, to Freeny.  The Freeny Community was named for Dr. Freeny's brother, Frederick Fabian, who migrated several years earlier.  Here are some letters exchanged by Dr. Freeny and his brothers,
Here, Here and Here.
Clem Freeny met and married Ann Elizabeth Mitchell, who was born 2 Jan 1852 in Arkansas.  They had three children, Alfred Bradley (born 11 Sep 1872), Mary Anna (born 20 Aug 1874) and Olin (born 10 Sep 1876).
