My paternal grandmother, Emma (Hooks) R 2 CONC eeves also lived there. My folks were school teachers and taught at Bl 2 CONC oomo in Neshoba County and Dixon and Ringgold in Scott County, when I w 2 CONC as very young. Of this time I remember very little. When I was 3 or 4 2 CONC , we moved to Starkville where my father was studying to become an Agri 2 CONC culture teacher. When he finished we moved to Center Hill in Lauderdal 2 CONC e County. They were about to lose a teacher if they couldn't get more s 2 CONC tudents, so offerred to let 5 year olds start to school that year (1939 2 CONC ). I had just turned 5 when school started but began First Grade. Kin 2 CONC dergarten was unheard of, at that time. Since my mother had been teach 2 CONC ing me since I was 3, it soon became apparent to the teacher that I alr 2 CONC eady knew all the first grade work, I was promoted at the end of the fi 2 CONC rst month and finished second grade while I was still 5 years old. 2 CONT Two years, while in 4rd grade, I remember hearing about the attack o 2 CONC n Pearl Harbor and our family gathered around the radio to listen to th 2 CONC e war news. The radio was powered by a car battery which my daddy woul 2 CONC d swap into the car every few days to charge it. Television, of course 2 CONC , had not been invented. At Center Hill we had electric lights run by a D 2 CONC elco power plant in our back yard which also punped water and powered t 2 CONC he lights at the school. This was our first experience with electricit 2 CONC y and we even had a faucet in the kitchen. My folks told all our relat 2 CONC ives what a great thing it was to just turn on the electric light rathe 2 CONC r than have to deal with the kerosene lamps, which most of them still h 2 CONC ad, and not to have to go to the well to draw water. 2 CONT We visited our relatives in Leake County about 1 weekend a month. W 2 CONC e'd hit paved Highway 19, at Colinsville, to Philadelphia and Hwy 16 to C 2 CONC arthage. Sometimes, we'd go south 15 miles to Meridian, hit the paved r 2 CONC oads and drive on paved Hwy 80 to Forest. Then it was 30 miles of grav 2 CONC el up Hwy 35 to the Walnut Grove, Starling Center, Estes Mill area, whe 2 CONC re most of our relatives lived. 2 CONT In 1942, the REA brought electricity to Center Hill and soon after w 2 CONC e got a General Electric refrigerator to replace our old ice box and a c 2 CONC ouple of years later Mama got a new Maytag wringer washer and could do h 2 CONC er washing on the back porch instead of in the black pot in the back ya 2 CONC rd. Of course she still had to heat a pot of water on the coal oil sto 2 CONC ve and por it it the washer, and rinseing was still done in washtubs al 2 CONC onside the washer. 2 CONT We lived there until 1945, when I finished the 7th grade at age 11 2 CONC , then moved to Beat Four School in Clarke County between Meridian and Q 2 CONC uitman. They had a new teachers home with hardwood floors and an indoo 2 CONC r bathroom with a toilet, tub and hot water. For the first time, we di 2 CONC dn't have to go to an outhouse in the back yard or heat water on the st 2 CONC ove to take a bath in a washtub. It was fantastic!!!! 2 CONT After 1 year there we moved to Edinburg, back in Leake County, wh 2 CONC ere Daddy was the Agriculture teacher and I started the 9th grade. The s 2 CONC chool building had burned that summer, so we had classes in the gym, lu 2 CONC nchroom and Agricultiure shop while they were building a new concrete b 2 CONC lock school building. We lived on one side of the hall in an old house 2 CONC , which was rented as a teachers home, and it was back to the outhouse, o 2 CONC ut back. We had running water but no hot water. In summer we took sho 2 CONC wers in an old smokehouse out back with a water hose hung over a rafter 2 CONC . After a year, Daddy bought the house and 3 acres of land, on which i 2 CONC t stood, and Coach Wiggins, who had lived across the hall, had to find o 2 CONC ther quarters. We now used his rooms for a living room and kitchen and h 2 CONC ad a bathroom built into the back of the hall with a toilet, tub and ho 2 CONC t water. Life was good and I finished the 10th grade. 2 CONT Due to a squabble between my daddy and the principal, we had to le 2 CONC ave Edinburg and I attended 11th grade at Thomastown High School, where D 2 CONC addy taught Agriculture to WWII veterans, under the GI Bill. The next y 2 CONC ear, we moved back to our house at Edinburg and my parents commuted to B 2 CONC arnes School to teach.
