2 CONT
2 CONT "First I was fortunate to find the family bible of William O. Mitchell'

2 CONT
2 CONT Mitchell was born somewhere in Virginia about 1767 and migrated to
2 CONT

2 CONT
2 CONT moved to Chester County, SC. Mary Ann was born on December 22,
2 CONT

2 CONT
2 CONT Henry Mitchell were married on September 4, 1792 in Johnston County

2 CONT William Oliver Mitchell was born March 23, 1803. He was married t

2 CONT
2 CONT He married, as I have indicated, Ann Fail, daughter of Thomas Fail. Th

1 NOTE Tillman McCarty (200) youngest son of Mahala Boddie and Philip McCarty, w
2 CONC as born in Edgefield, South Carolina, November 7, 1824. He married Sara
2 CONC h J. Lovelace in Barbour County, Alabama, January 29, 1845. She was bor
2 CONC n March 14, 1831 and died January 2, 1892. He died October 24, 1893. Th
2 CONC ey are buried at Forest, Mississippi. Tillman, like all of the McCartys
2 CONC , was a land owner, but primarily he was a merchant, having a general s
2 CONC tore where everything from crackers to bourbon was sold. He moved with h
2 CONC is family from Dale County, Alabama, to Mississippi, in 1859. He worked a
2 CONC s a clerk in a store for a time and then established his own business. C

2 CONC el, William Dawson.
2 CONT
2 CONT Biographical Sketch of Tillman and Sarah (Lovelace) McCarty
2 CONT by F. M. Wiggins
2 CONT When and from where Till and Sarah McCarty came to Mississippi is c
2 CONC onjecture. Most early settlers in Mississippi came either from South Ca
2 CONC rolina, Georgia or Alabama. However, the records show that this couple l
2 CONC ived in Neshoba County during their early married life. Some, if not al
2 CONC l, of their children were born here. Willie Dawson married Tammie Brand
2 CONC , a Philadelphia girl, who died at first childbirth and was buried in C
2 CONC edarlawn cemetery, Philadelphia, Miss. The marble slab marking her grav
2 CONC e is broken where the birth and death dates are engraved and therefore, a
2 CONC re not discernable.
2 CONT
2 CONT Sometime in the late 80's Tillman and Sarah moved on westward to Sebast
2 CONC opol, a village in Scott County and operated a store for a time, later m
2 CONC oving on westward to Fannin, Rankin County. Evidently, Mike and Willie D
2 CONC awson went with them to Fannin or joined them later, since both married F
2 CONC annin girls. Jim and Sis found mates in Scott County and settled in the H
2 CONC arperville area and raised large families. I the meantime, Venie marrie
2 CONC d Nicolas Parkes of Neshoba County where the seven older children were b
2 CONC orn. In early 1891 the family moved to Fannin. Till McCarty had given V
2 CONC enie a place there provided they would move thereon.
2 CONT
2 CONT The land around Fannin lay well but was hard to cultivate and wasn't ve
2 CONC ry productive. The older Parkes boys were visiting their Uncle Worn San
2 CONC ders in the Madden community in Leake County and saw that the land was m
2 CONC uch easier cultivated and was more productive than the Fannin dirt. The
2 CONC y located a farm that could be bought for $1100.00. They thought it a g
2 CONC ood buy and told their father if he would buy that place they would sta
2 CONC y with him and see it paid out. Venie sold her place in Fannin for $500
2 CONC .00 and applied the proceeds on the purchase. I have heard Mr. Parkes s
2 CONC ay that this was the best deal he ever made.
2 CONT
2 CONT The following incident was told to me by an old Confederate comrade of T
2 CONC ill McCarty, which is indicative of the nature of all the McCartys that I e
2 CONC ver knew. A squadron of Confederate soldiers, as McDougal related, was d
2 CONC ispatched on a foraging mission to recruit supplies. Till and McDougal l
2 CONC eft to guard camp. A squadron of Union calvarymen came galloping up and o
2 CONC rdered Till and McDougal to surrender and stack arms. Till acted as spo
2 CONC kesman and said, "Sure we surrender and will stack arms, and we'll go y
2 CONC ou one better. We offer you our sleeping quarters, (pointing to an aban
2 CONC doned farm house) but we make one simple request: Allow us to remove an
2 CONC d bury a comrade who has just died with the smallpox."
2 CONT
2 CONT The Union commander reigned his horse in the opposite direction and sho
2 CONC uted to his men, "Follow me." Deception is hardly ever justified, but i
2 CONC n this case I wouldn't charge Grand Papa McCarty with dishonesty and ne
2 CONC ither do I think he will have to answer to God in the hereafter. McDoug
2 CONC al explained that there wasn't any man dead or alive in that house.

2 CONT CLEVELAND
2 CONT [Compiled by Kristina Moore Simms, 200 Bristol Street, Apt. 36, Perry G
2 CONC A 31069,
2 CONT June 2004]
2 CONT
2 CONT The Clevelands are English in origin. The point at which the Clevelan
2 CONC d line
2 CONT appears in our heritage is the marriage of Green Pinckney Harp, son of D
2 CONC ixon
2 CONT Harp [see HARP Chapter] to Martha Thomas Wright Cleveland ca 1828. Gr
2 CONC een and
2 CONT Martha Cleveland Harp, of Crawford County GA, were the parents of my
2 CONT g-grandfather, William Dixon Harp, of Macon County GA.
2 CONT The first of our Cleveland line to come to Georgia was Jacob Cleveland
2 CONC , b. 1729
2 CONT in Culpeper County VA [probably b. in Orange County from which Culpeper w
2 CONC as
2 CONT formed in 1748], and died 1791 at Van’s Creek, Elbert County, GA. Jac
2 CONC ob
2 CONT [1766-1790] married Mildred "Millie" White, daughter of Jeremiah White a
2 CONC nd Mary
2 CONT Martin White. Millie was born in York County, VA on March 20, 1730, an
2 CONC d died in
2 CONT Elbert County about 1806.# There are researchers who have traced the J
2 CONC eremiah
2 CONT White line back a few more generations but I am not going to include th
2 CONC at here.
2 CONT Cleveland ancestry in the United States has been the source of much de
2 CONC bate
2 CONT among Cleveland descendants, both of the Northern and Southern lines. I
2 CONC n 1899,
2 CONT not long after the tenure of Grover Cleveland as President of the Unite
2 CONC d States,
2 CONT Edmund J. Cleveland and Horace Gillette Cleveland published their monum
2 CONC ental
2 CONT three-volume Genealogy of the Cleveland and Cleaveland Families.# The a
2 CONC uthors
2 CONT of this work did a generally fine job, but the information on Southern b
2 CONC ranch of
2 CONT the Clevelands, in particular, has some errors; for example, the father o
2 CONC f Jacob
2 CONT Cleveland is listed as "Jeremiah," and no evidence can be found for the
2 CONC
2 CONT existence of this "Jeremiah."
2 CONT Cleveland researcher Grace Lee Smith Green has made a good case for a J
2 CONC ohn
2 CONT Cleveland, listed in 1767 Tithables, Pittsylvania County VA to be the f
2 CONC ather of
2 CONT Jacob. Jacob had connections and land dealings in Pittsylvania County a
2 CONC nd also
2 CONT lived there a while. John is in the right place and the right time fra
2 CONC me.
2 CONT Although there were Cleveland men with the name Jeremiah, none can be f
2 CONC ound in
2 CONT Virginia records (which are plentiful) with the location and dates to b
2 CONC e a
2 CONT possible father to Jacob. Because the "Jeremiah" link does not hold u
2 CONC p,
2 CONT neither does the supposed descent of Jacob Cleveland from Alexander Cle
2 CONC veland.
2 CONT All of those early Virginia Clevelands were surely related, but the seq
2 CONC uence of
2 CONT descent that lists
2 CONT Alexander I > Alexander II > Jeremiah > Jacob as set forth in the 3-vol
2 CONC ume
2 CONT Cleveland genealogy has so far lacked complete support from family rese
2 CONC archers.
2 CONT A further unusual characteristic of the Cleveland line is the so-calle
2 CONC d
2 CONT "Cleveland-Cromwell connection." The name Cromwell shows up frequently i
2 CONC n
2 CONT Cleveland family trees. Down through the years many Southern Cleveland
2 CONC s
2 CONT maintained that they were descended illegitimately from Oliver Cromwell w
2 CONC ith the
2 CONT result that the name Oliver Cromwell shows up regularly in Cleveland fa
2 CONC milies.
2 CONT This tradition goes back to a novel written in 1741 by Antoine Francoi
2 CONC s Prevost
2 CONT (1697-1763) entitled Le philosophe anglais; ou Histoire de Monsieur Cle
2 CONC veland,
2 CONT fil naturel de Cromwell, ecrit par lui meme – translated into English a
2 CONC s The
2 CONT Life and Entertaining Adventures of Mr. Cleveland, Natural Son of Olive
2 CONC r
2 CONT Cromwell, Written by Himself. "Mr. Cleveland," the supposed illegitima
2 CONC te son of
2 CONT Cromwell is never even given a first name in the book, so he is difficu
2 CONC lt to
2 CONT identify if indeed he existed outside of fiction.
2 CONT Another character in this novel, a Lady Axminster, has also fou
2 CONC nd her
2 CONT way into early Cleveland genealogy, as "Lady Asminster" wife of Alexand
2 CONC er
2 CONT Cleveland I, and nobody has been able to identify her either. This boo
2 CONC k was a
2 CONT pot-boiler written by a popular author and was, no doubt, much talked a
2 CONC bout in
2 CONT its day.#
2 CONT It would be an exciting bit of genealogical research to find that "Mr.
2 CONC
2 CONT Cleveland" and "Lady Axminster" are really part of our ancestry but so f
2 CONC ar, no
2 CONT one has been able to prove them to be anything more than entertaining f
2 CONC iction.
2 CONT Until further proof appears we will have to content ourselves with our C
2 CONC leveland
2 CONT ancestors being plantation owners of normal descent rather than clandes
2 CONC tine
2 CONT descendants of Oliver Cromwell.#
2 CONT Now back to Virginia. The children (not necessarily in birth order) o
2 CONC f Jacob
2 CONT Cleveland and Millie White Cleveland are:#
2 CONT
2 CONT Jeremiah Cleveland—b. August 12, 1757
2 CONT Rice Cleveland—b. March 13, 1760
2 CONT James Cleveland – b. July 2, 1762
2 CONT John Cleveland, b. 1769
2 CONT Jacob, Jr. Cleveland—b. Jan. 26, 1772
2 CONT Wyatt Cleveland—b. Feb. 25, 1764
2 CONT Martha (Patsy) Cleveland—b. Feb 20, 1774
2 CONT Mary Cleveland—b. Jan. 7, 1768
2 CONT Elizabeth Cleveland—b. Jan. 29, 1782
2 CONT Reuben Cleveland – b. Aug. 13, 1776
2 CONT Daniel Cleveland—b. Sept. 9, 1778
2 CONT William Cleveland, b. in Virginia, b. April 8, 1766, St. Ann’s Parish,
2 CONT Albemarle Co., VA., #d. Crawford County GA ca 1844 (our ancestor).
2 CONT Some transactions linking Jacob to Albemarle County VA are as follows:
2 CONT 1760, p. 87, Surveyors Plat Books \vols. 1 & 2; Cleaveland Coffey buys 4
2 CONC 7 acres
2 CONT on the South Hardware River joining Jacob Cleaveland. Page 90, Cleave

2 CONT Coffey adjoining land of Jacob Cleaveland on head branches of South Har
2 CONC dware.
2 CONT From Deed Abstracts of Albemarle County, VA, Deed Book 2, 9 Feb 1758-12 M
2 CONC arch,
2 CONT 1761, p. 93, David Bernitt [sic] sells a tract of land which Edward Cof
2 CONC fey lived
2 CONT on in Albermarle County on the branches of the Hardware River adjoining J
2 CONC acob
2 CONT Cleveland.
2 CONT The Cleveland family and the Coffey family had marriages, but none that a
2 CONC re in
2 CONT our direct line.
2 CONT On September 9, 1762, Jacob Cleveland, planter, and his wife Mildred so
2 CONC ld 99
2 CONT acres to Alexander Cleveland in Albemarle County. The old Cleveland fa
2 CONC mily
2 CONT history states that an "Alexander Cleveland" was grandfather to Jacob, b
2 CONC ut no
2 CONT existing records [or known dates] support this claim. The Alexander wi
2 CONC th whom
2 CONT Jacob had land dealings was more likely a cousin.
2 CONT Jacob and Millie and family migrated from Virginia about 1780. They sta
2 CONC yed in
2 CONT the Pendleton District of S.C. for a couple of years, and then moved on t
2 CONC o
2 CONT Elbert County, GA. The Clevelands moved for the same reason our other a
2 CONC ncestors
2 CONT moved --- to seek a better economic opportunity. For people of Jacob
2 CONT Cleveland’s era, a better opportunity meant more land on which to farm. L
2 CONC arge
2 CONT families were common, and parents also had to consider the future oppor
2 CONC tunities
2 CONT that might be available for their sons and daughters.
2 CONT Elbert County was formed in 1790 from Wilkes, which was part of the "Ce
2 CONC ded
2 CONT Lands" of 1773. In the last two decades of the 18th century, permane
2 CONC nt
2 CONT settlers like the Cleveland family migrated into the area seeking new f
2 CONC arming land.
2 CONT Jacob Cleveland’s will was executed April 4, 1790 and recorded May 16, 1
2 CONC 791.
2 CONT Executors were Will Kidd and Jacob’s son Jeremiah. The will mentions d
2 CONC aughter
2 CONT Elizabeth, wife, and sons Reuben, Daniel and Jeremiah.# Witnesses we
2 CONC re Reuben
2 CONT White and John White.
2 CONT William Cleveland, son of Jacob and Millie, born April 6, 1766, in Vir
2 CONC ginia,
2 CONT appears on the nearby Franklin County GA tax lists from 1801 to 1819. I c
2 CONC annot
2 CONT find him on the 1820 census. He was on the census in Jasper County GA i
2 CONC n 1830.
2 CONT Listed as having been a soldier, he was a fortunate drawer in the 1832 C
2 CONC herokee
2 CONT Land Lottery for land in Jasper County. I am assuming that this means h
2 CONC e was
2 CONT in the militia in Georgia but I cannot find his name on any of the list
2 CONC s I have
2 CONT consulted so far. Even though some descendants of Jacob Cleveland beli
2 CONC eve that
2 CONT he was a revolutionary soldier, records have not been found to substant
2 CONC iate the
2 CONT tradition Records from the former Wilkes County area are known to be
2 CONT fragmented, so the true information may be irretrievably lost. Other m
2 CONC embers
2 CONT of the extended Cleveland clan, such as Col. Benjamin Cleveland, hero o
2 CONC f the
2 CONT Battle of King’s Mountain, in North Carolina, have found their way into t
2 CONC he
2 CONT history books.
2 CONT William Cleveland married (1) Mary Seaggs in Franklin County. She was b
2 CONC orn
2 CONT about 1771, and died before 1798. He married (2) Rhoda Wright# in 1798
2 CONC ,
2 CONT daughter of David Wright. Rhoda was born September 1777 and died 1865 i
2 CONC n
2 CONT Crawford County, GA.
2 CONT William is on the federal census in Crawford County in 1840. In the h
2 CONC ousehold:
2 CONT one male, 60-70; one female 60-70; one female 5-10; 2 females 10-15.
2 CONT From notes made by Adrianne Harp Moore, the children of William Clevel
2 CONC and were:
2 CONT "Absalom Carter Cleveland, married Miss Lucinda Harp of Crawford County
2 CONC ,was
2 CONT murdered, 1854; Mary, married Allen G. Simmons; Mildred or Millie, marr

2 CONC ettled in
2 CONT Crawford County. These dates corroborate with Mrs. O. C. Cleveland’s B
2 CONC ible, in
2 CONT the possession of Mrs. Oliver Cleveland of Culloden, Georgia."
2 CONT William Cleveland’s was signed on January 12, 1835. Letters testament
2 CONC ary were
2 CONT issued to W.C. Cleveland and A. C. Cleveland, executors, and this was r
2 CONC ecorded
2 CONT Jan, 1844 (exact date illegible). Rhoda Cleveland (wife) was given the l

2 CONT His son Absolom C. Cleveland was given land. His daughter Martha T. H

2 CONT Martha Thomas Wright Cleveland was born 1819 in Jasper County. She wa

2 CONC ny children William had, but there were a large number of Caldwell fami

1 NOTE From the book "Hearne Family History"

2 CONC orse and left Mary at once reported to her mother, who told her she was f
2 CONC oolish, that she would never do any better; and, without further ado, M
2 CONC ary donned her sunbonnet and shawl, took a near cut across the field, i
2 CONC ntercepted Mr. Freney as he went around the road, and climbed on the fe
2 CONC nce just as he came up, when he gallantly offered to take her up behind h
2 CONC im, as she was going his way; his horse shied a little and did not read
