Tue, Aug 1 (Wasilla and Hatcher's Pass):

We left the trailer in the Wassilla Walmart parking lot and drove the van to Hatcher's Pass, an old gold mining area.  The temp was in the 40s.  We spent the night at Walmart and it rained all night.
Wed, Aug 2 - Tue, Aug 8 (To Valdez and return to Anchorage):

We left Wassilla at 9AM for Valdez.  We saw a real Alaska 4-wheel drive vehicle,  stopped at the Worthington Glacier, and at the nearby Bridal Veil and Horsetail Falls.  We camped at Sea Otter Campground on the Bay, in Valdez.  The campground is on the water, with mountains all around us, and the Alaska Pipeline terminal across the bay.  On Thursday, the sun finally came out.  Everyone was catching salmon, so Joe bought some tackle, a three day license and we moved across the bay to where the fish were coming in.  We attended the Gold Rush Days celebration and parade and a FREE salmon and halibut cookout.  Joe caught four salmon.  The sun came out on Saturday and we went to a pancake breakfast, visiting a salmon spawning area and saw a small black bear eating a salmon and also a young bald eagle.  Joe fished for awhile each day and caught 15 of the 18 salmon allowed on the 3 day license.  We left Valdez on Monday, with the sun shining, stopped at Worthington glacier, again, and spent the night at Chickaloon, a one store "town" with a campground.  On Tuesday, we were back in Anchorage, camped at Walmart.  We drove into Wassilla and visited the Iditarod Headquarters museum, where we saw a film, met some sled dogs and bought some gifts.
Wed, Aug 9 - Sunday, Aug 15 (Seward, Portage Glacier and Anchorage):
We left the trailer at Walmart and drove the van and Neal drove his camper to Seward, where we camped (in the van) at the Air Force Recreation Area.  We watched videos at Kenai Fjords Park Hdq. (one on the big earthquake here).  On Thursday, we went on a 1/2 day cruise on an Army tour boat, and saw
sea lions, kiwi, puffins, eagles and two cabins built on rock islands.  We also visited Exit Glacier.  Friday, we returned to Anchorage, by way of Portage Glacier, where we rode the Ptarmigan tour boat out to the glacier and saw a huge chunk 'calve' off the glacier into the water.  We camped at Walmart and on Saturday we moved to the military campground on Elmendorf AFB.  We went to Ft. Richardson to attend Lauren Roland's 1st birthday party.  On the way out the gate we saw a mama moose and her calf.  Sunday it rained all day so we went to the commissary and PX and rested.
