January - April 1996 - This has been a quiet year compared to 1995, and our all summer trip to Alaska. Our Alaska videos were quite a hit, as we ended up showing the edited version to 2 different senior citizen groups. Sue worked on her yard and stained glass. Her biggest project ever, a window over 6' wide and nearly 5' high was completed and picked up just after the first of the year for installation in Madden Memories Nursing Home. Joe helped her sometimes, but mostly worked with his computer hobby. He upgraded the kids and grandkids computers for them and helped Harry Caldwell build himself one. Sue was a volunteer at the Palaces of St. Petersburg exibit in Jackson a day or two each week for most of the summer and enjoyed it greatly.
April - May 1996 - On April 29, we formed a convoy of travel trailers with Harry and Donna Caldwell and Roger and Earnestine Lindsley, and headed west. We visited the site of the Oklahoma City bombing, then went to Palo Duro Canyon in Texas. In Albuquerque, NM, we rode the tram up to Sandia Peak and later drove the van to the top. We continued to Santa Fe and Taos, NM, where the prairie fires were burning. We saw the Aztec National Monument and went on to Durango, CO and rode the train up to Silverton. It was a beautiful ride up a river gorge and there was snow alongside the tracks before we reached Silverton. We really enjoyed our ride on the Durango-Silverton Train. The next day we drove to Mesa Verde to see the cliff dwellings. We had been on the road about 2 weeks. The Caldwells and Lindsleys got lonely for home and the grandkids and headed back East. Joe and Nancy Sue continued to Four Corners and the Grand Canyon. We came back by way of Sunset Crater, Meteor crater, Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. The desert was in bloom. We wound our way back toward home through a west Texas heat wave. We spent a couple of days with son Bruce and wife Judy in Houston, then back to Florence, MS to spend a couple of days with daughter Nita Best, husband Bob and the grandkids. We were back home May 22. This was our "big" trip for 1996.
A synopsis of our travels in 1996, taken from our Christmas newsletter. We couldn't find Sue's diary.
