May 5-8, 1998 - Joe helps build Nita a deck:
We took the trailer to Nita's, and stayed a few days, so Joe could help build a deck. They're making it into a really nice place.
May 11, 1998 - Home to Petit Jean SP, AR:
We left home at 6:40, stopped in Carthage for gas and waited for the Caldwells to catch up. It was nice and cool early, but hot by lunchtime in Pine Bluff, AR. We ate buffet at KFC and filled up with gas at the FINA. We got 28.5 gallons @ 98.9 cents/gallon for a cost of $25.52. We stayed at Petit Jean State Park.
May 12, 1998 - On to Cherokee, OK:
We were up at 5:30 and woke the Caldwells at 7:00. We got gas at Lowe's for 99.9. We ate lunch at a rest stop at 1:30 and, just outside Yukon, OK, blew a trailer tire. We pulled into a service station and Harry changed the tire. We stopped at a Walmart Super Center for a tire at 3:30, but could not get one. We went on to El Reno and got a tire at the Walmart, there, then spent the night at the Cherokee, Exit 108 KOA.
May 13-14, 1998 - Palo Duro State Park, Amarillo, TX:
We got gas at Cherokee, continued west, stopped at a large peanut farm at Exit 88 and bought $40 worth of peanuts. We gassed up again at Claude, TX and got to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, TX about 3 PM, pooled our food and ate a late lunch. On the 14th, we went into Amarillo to Walmart and and had lunch at a steak house there. That afternoon, Sue and Donna walked some trails in the canyon, and we saw a flock of wild turkeys near our campsite.
May 15, 1998 - Chama-Toltec Scenic Railway, Chama, NM:
We woke at 1:30 AM to thunder, lightening and heavy winds. We got up this morning to cooler weather (58) and still strong winds. We filled up with gas at Love's at Tucumcari, NM and at Kline's Corners, where we ate lunch and Sue and Donna did some shopping, then on to Rio Chama Campground at Chama, NM at 6 PM. It was too cold to sit out. We decided to sleep in the next morning and ride the train day after.
