Friday, Jan 21 - Saturday, Feb 5 (Ft Huachuca area): Friday, Jan 21, we drove over to see the Aerostat, an anchored blimp, used to watch the border. It was on the ground, so we got to see it, close up. Saturday to Monday, we went to the PX and Commissary, sat outside, Joe did some work on the M/H, went to the dental clinic, to the main CG to send email and just took it easy. We drove up Garden Canyon Road, but never found the petrogliphs or the waterfall, which were supposed to be there. The road, after the last picnic area, was very narrow, with big rocks. A jeep road, at best. That night we had strong winds and Joe had to get up and put the awning in. Wednesday, we moved to another campsite, on the end, with lots more room. Thursday, we took Smokey, the cat, to the on base Vet Clinic for grooming, a couple of shots and a bath. We left her, went to breakfast and to town, and picked her up looking like a different cat. It was chilly, shirt sleeve weather. We called home and learned they had an inch of snow. Friday, we drove up Carr Canyon, It was very pretty, but steep, and we had to use 4-wheel drive on the way back. We ate breakfast at Denny's, bought tickets to next Friday nights, Cowboy Music and Poetry performance, and picked up some maps from the Chamber of Commerce to send to the Caldwells, back home. Saturday, Sue did laundry while Joe went to do email, then hit the BX and Commissary and returned to camp. Sunday, Jan 30, we drove to Fairbank, an old ghost town. There were remains of several old buildings and we walked the trail, looking for the cemetary, but couldn't find it. That night we watched the St Louis Rams beat the Tennessee Titans in the Super Bowl. Monday, we drove to the border and walked over into Nogales, Mexico. Tuesday, we visited the base museums (this is the oldest active base in the US), and saw some old calvary relics from the 1800s, then drove to the Coronado Memorial on the Mexican Border. Wednesday, we drove up Ramsey Canyon and visited the Nature Center. We talked to the Caldwells and Harry is going for heart catheterization, tomorrow. Thursday, we drove up Miller Canyon, where a B&B has hummingbird feeders. They have as many as 12 species, here, but most don't come until March. We called home and were glad to hear Harry won't have to get bypass surgery. Friday, we took it easy and went to the Cowboy Music and Poetry performance, that night. Saturday, we got things together to leave and went back to the Cowboy Poets gathering for another night of fun. |
