On the Road in 2000

Sunday, Feb 6 - Thursday, Feb 17 (Davis Monthan AFB, Tucson, AZ):
We moved Davis Monthan AFB campground. It's a nice place, but we'll be in the overflow for a few days. Monday, we took the M/H to Beaudry RV for lube and oil change. Big mistake. We were there 5 hours, and the charges were steep. We won't go there again. Tuesday, we did the PX and Commissary and Wednesday, drove out to the eastern part of Saguaro National Park. Thursday, we took the loop road through the western part of Saguaro NP and visited a petrogliph site. Friday, we got in the main campground and, during the weekend, we just took it easy, read and made phone calls. Monday, we went to Pima Space Museum and rode the tram around the aircraft boneyard looking at a lot of old aircraft and hearing some stories about them. Joe made pictures of a lot of aircraft he has flown over the years. Tuesday, we hit the PX, Commissary and Burger King, read and relaxed. Wednesday, we drove to Green Valley to the Titan Missle Museum. Thursday was a rest day.
Friday, Feb 18 - Sunday, Feb 20 (Organ Pipe Cactus National Park):
We moved to Organ Pipe Cactus NP, a beautiful place. As with most National parks, there are no hookups in the campground. We put Smokey out on her leash so she could enjoy watching the Gambrel Quail among the shrubs. Saturday we drove a 50+ mile loop road around the park and saw lots of cactus, an old gold mine, an old ranch site and along 20 miles of 3 strand barbed wire fence on the Mexican Border. That night we attended a ranger talk on the geology of the park, and could see lights up on a mountainside. The ranger said it was probably illegals entering the US through the park. Sunday, we drove the Mt. Ajo loop on the other side of the park, with much different terrain, mountains and a large arch. We also drove a dirt road to an old ranch right on the border. At one point, the fence was down and there was a well traveled road through the gap in the fence. Obviously, our southern borders are a joke. That night they had an inch of rain, the first since a half inch in September.
