On the Road e-mail #4a (February 23-27) Organ Pipe Cactus NP to Gila Bend, AZ Fri-Sun, Feb 23-25 Joe & Nancy Sue Reeves "On the Road", Organ Pipe Cactus NP: It was warm and sunny all week with temp in the 70s days and 50s at night until last night. It kept getting cooler and Friday AM the temp was down to 32. It warmed up considerably during the day, but not enough to sit outside. Saturday was cloudy and cold all day so we stayed inside and read. Sunday AM it was warm and sunny again so we drove over to Quitobaquito Springs where, right out in the middle of the desert, there is a big spring flowing out from the base of a hill and forming a nice pond with some ducks on it and surrounded by grass, bushes and some big Cottonwood trees. By the time we got to camp it had clouded up, a cold wind had picked up, and it was sprinkling rain. As I'm writing this at 10PM, it has been raining off and on since we got in at 5PM. Hey, this is the DESERT! It's supposed to be hot and dry but if this keeps up all night it may be muddy by morning. Unless it's raining, we plan to leave tomorrow for Yuma. Mon, Feb 26: The weather was good so we left about 9AM. We planned to go to Yuma, but I called both the military campgrounds there only to find they are both full and expected to remain so for awhile. Apparently, they let snowbirds come in and homestead for the whole winter. We checked at the Air Force Auxillary Field at Gila Bend and they had 3 spots so we stopped here. It's in the boondocks but we get full hookups for $7/night and have a free laundry, so we'll stay here a couple of weeks to get mail, do laundry, etc. If Yuma clears out by then, we may go there. We'll see. We learned we could take a tour of the bombing and strafing range (part of the Barry Goldwater Air Force Range), here, so we got it set up for tomorrow.
