On the Road e-mail #5a (March 1-5) Gila Bend, AZ Tue, Mar 6 - Wed, Mar 7, Joe & Nancy Sue Reeves "On the Road": Tuesday, Sue did house cleaning and washed the windows on the motorhome. We sat outside for awhile but the wind picked up and we had to come in. Joe made some calls to try to figure out where we'll go next. We plan to leave here next Monday for Alomogordo, NM, but will be on the road a few days before we get there. Wednesday - It started raining last night before bedtime and rained all night, at least 2". There is water standing everywhere this AM. The desert is really getting green from all the rain, and there are wild flowers everywhere. Joe went over about 5PM to send e-mail. Thursday, Mar 8: After lunch, we drove 13 miles west on I-8 to exit 102, then about 10 miles north to Painted Rock campground and petroglyph site. The BLM campground there has no hookups but nice spots with picnic tables and fire rings for $2/night. Right next to the campground is the petroglyph site with lots of ancient Indian graffiti on rocks from several hundred years ago. There was also some paleface graffiti with dates in the 1800s as well as some of the modern kind. The campground was interesting and we may try to stay there sometime, but not this trip. From there we drove another 5 miles or so to a Corps of Engineers dam at the end of the road but they had the road blocked so we couldn't drive up and see the lake (or whether it had any water in it). We could've walked, but by then we were pretty well walked out. There was no one there and everything was locked up. We got back to Gila Bend about 5PM and stopped at Burger King to eat. Friday, Mar 9 - Wed, Mar 14: Gila Bend to Tuscon, AZ: Friday was cloudy but warm. Sue did a load of clothes and Joe did e-mail. We got a package from Camping World with 2 more flourescent lights for the M/H. We are getting all the lights replaced with flourescent as they make more light and use less power when we don't have hookups. All we did Saturday & Sunday, at Gila Bend, was sit outside and read. Monday we moved to Davis-Monthan AFB at Tuscon, AZ. The main campground was full, so we are in the overflow area. There are no hookups, but it only costs $3/night. Tuesday we sat outside and visited Wal-Mart, the PX and Commissary. The computer quit working last Saturday so Joe went all over Tuscon trying to get someone to work on it or find a used one to buy. No luck! They have a Compaq service center here, but since it is out of it's 1 year warenty, they are NO help! For my opinion of Compaq, click here.
