On the Road e-mail #8 Page 2 (April 6 - April 7) Alomogordo to Trinity Site, NM Friday, April 6: It is mostly cloudy and windy with a little rain. OOPS!, we opened the blinds and looked out at the M/H next door. Their awning has been blown back over the top of the M/H and they're not at home. It doesn't look like he had it tied down. Guess he didn't listen to the weather report, last night. At 11:15AM, they came in and he climbed up on the roof and tossed it down. It looked like the fabric was ripped at one corner and the frame was bent a little but he got it rolled up. The weather was chilly, so we just stayed in, listened to music from the satellite and read. Saturday, April 7: We were up at 6:30 this AM and the temp was 32. We got to the Alamogordo Fairgrounds by 7:30 to join the convoy to Trinity site. We had figured there would be 25-30 cars. There were actually about 200, including several motor homes. We had a convoy several miles long. What a fiasco. We drove 85 miles in 2 hours through the missile range. There were another 200 cars, or so, and 4 big tour busses which had come in by the Stallion gate, on the north end. There is really not that much to see there. They have a monument at ground zero, a shed built over an area of the original crater where you can look down through a window in the roof and see some Trinitite (melted sand from the heat of the bomb) and there are pictures all around the fence showing events, including stages in the explosion. We took a bus about 3 miles to the old McDonald ranch house where the bomb was assembled. There was no charge for the tour including the bus ride to the ranch house. We decided to go back by way of the Stallion gate on the north side of the range, only 17 miles from Trinity. Then we had 115 miles by highway to return to Alamogordo. Now we know the easiest way to do it would be to take the RV up near the Stallion gate to a campground, spend the night, and go in that way on our own. The 200 vehicle convoy for 85 miles was a bit much! See Trinity Site Pictures. Joe & Nancy Sue On the Road” Holloman AFB, Alomogordo, NM |
