Tuesday, May 29: (Newberry Nat. Volcanic Mon. near Bend, OR)

Late yesterday we fed Smokey, the cat, a tranquilizer and gave her a haircut and shampoo.  We figured out, later, that we didn't wait long enough for it to take effect.  We both ended up with scratches and she didn't end up really drunk until an hour after we were done.  Then she stayed messed up for most of the night.  We'll know better next time.  The wind blew all night and this morning the temp was 46.  We left Mtn. Home AFB, ID about 9:45.  We'd planned to stop at a BLM campground near Riley, OR about 250 miles away.  About 50 miles before there, we crossed into Pacific time and ran the clock back an hour.  Then when we got there it was still early and Sue wasn't tired yet, so we decided just to keep going to Newberry National Volcanic Monument.  She drove 400 miles in 9 1/2 hours.  A pretty long trip, for us.  We're in a Forest Service campground near there, now.  The campground is very nice, with big spaces, lots of space between sites, lots of shade from big ponderosa pines and only one camper besides the host and us.  Smokey has been outside on her leash swapping insults with a squirrel in a nearby tree.  It's now 8:45 PM Pacific time, and the sun has just set, but it's still daylight.  It has been in the 60s all day and is getting a bit chilly, now.  We'll sleep under the blankets tonight.  We'll tour this area tomorrow and get some pictures.
