On the Road E-mail #17 Page 2 (Sep 4-8) Dawson City, Yukon From: Joe & Nancy Sue Reeves "On the Road" Home Page Travel 2001 Tues-Thur, Sept 4-6 (Bonanza Gold RV Park, Dawson City, YT): Tuesday, the weather cleared, and it was blue sky, sunny and 60 degrees. Sue watched tennis and Joe read all day. Wednesday and Thursday, was more of the same but it rained both days. Friday, Sept 7, Dawson City, Yukon Territory: The weather was terrible this morning. The tennis is over Sunday so, if the weather is nice, we might stay an extra day. Late afternoon: The weather cleared some and the sun came out, so we drove up the Dome just north of the town. There was quite a view from the top. The fall colors and Birch trees are pretty, here. Back in town, we visited the cabins of two famous writers from ths area. First we stopped by the Jack London Centre. They moved his cabin from it's original location to this spot. The cabin is on the left. Looking into the cabin we saw beds made of sticks tied together and covered with caribou skins, a wood stove and oil lamps. A block away is Robert Service's cabin in it's original location. A sign in front, with his picture on it, tells about it. We got a picture of the ferry and an old stern wheeler and the monument to the miners, on main street (the only paved street in town). Some buildings in town are the Downtown Hotel, Diamond Tooth Gertie's gambling hall, a church, a nice house for sale. Here's a view down the street. The streets are all dirt (actually mud) with plank sidewalks in front of the stores. Saturday, Sept 8 (Bonanza Gold RV Park, Dawson City, YT): Today, Sue watched all the tennis games and read in between. At the resturant, next to the RV park, they were having a different kind of tournament. A poker tournament! Joe watched most of the tennis with Sue, but went over and watched the Poker players for awhile. They had about 50 players competing to see who would go to Las Vegas to play in the World Series of Poker. These folks take their poker playing seriously.
