On the Road #11 April 16-17, 2002, Las Vegas, NV
and Hoover Dam
From: Joe & Nancy Sue Reeves, Harry & Donna Caldwell
Tuesday, April 16 (Hoover Dam):
Today we drove to Hoover Dam (Formerly Boulder Dam), which creates Lake Meade by blocking the Colorado River (which created the Grand Canyon). Most of the water and electricity in the area comes from the dam. There was quite a crowd there as it has apparently become quite a tourist attraction. We had to park on the 4th level of the parking garage to find a space. We didn't take the regular tour of the dam as we understood it to involve quite a bit of walking. We just walked out on it and made some pictures. It is bigger than the Glen Canyon Dam we visited last year. The water was lower than normal as they have been short of rain up the canyon. See pictures. Tonight Harry, Donna, Joe & Nancy Sue met the Ebarbs at one of the casinos for dinner, had a good meal and swapped "On the Road" tales. We plan to take tomorrow off, rest, and get back "On the Road" Thursday AM but plan to go slower on the way home than coming here. See Pictures.
Wednesday, April 17 (Nellis AFB FamCamp):
Today we went to the Thunderbirds Museum on the base and Harry found the names of three guys, he knew, who were killed when the Thunderbirds maintenance plane crashed in the 50s and also another of his friends who was on the Thunderbird crew during that time. We had planned to rest today but the ladies wanted to go back to an outlet mall in town so Joe and Harry rested on a bench while they shopped. Then we got a burger and came home. Tomorrow we head east.
